The Porsche Cayman

By JacK Macdowell

The Panamera is the first sedan that Porsche has put into production. Many Porsche purists scoffed at the idea, declaring that the car "wasn't a true Porsche." The Cayenne was also initially frowned upon by Porsche enthusiasts but has since been one of the most successful models that the German automaker has ever produced. The Panamera is also enjoying successful sales, and to carve out a niche in the market, Mansory has created a complete tuning program for the Panamera Turbo that sends 690 horsepower to all four Panamera wheels.

Now available here in the UK, I wanted to find out if this new sporty two-seater was more than just a Boxster with a lid? Both cars appear mechanically so similar, the Cayman S could easily have been called the Boxster Coup, saving Porsche all the bother of coming up with another name; which in this case was lifted from an alligator indigenous to a warmer climate. Even Porsche have been at pains to point out that 'to classify the Cayman S as merely the coup version of the Boxster does a dis-service to both cars, each of which is unique with its own special characteristics.'

The 4.8 liter V8 that comes in the Porsche Cayenne S is a 385 horsepower powerhouse that will launch this three and a half ton SUV from 0-60 in roughly 6.5 seconds. For those keeping score, that's fast enough to keep up with the all-new VW GTI, a 3000 pound hatchback. This normally-aspirated V8 is more than capable for towing as well; with 369 foot-pounds of torque, the Cayenne S will tow more than its own weight (maximum towing capacity: 7716 pounds). With sure-footed all wheel drive and flat torque curve, towing up even the steepest hills is a snap.

As part of the exterior package, edo competition has also replaced the original Porsche Panamera wheels with new lightweight alloys. The new 3 piece wheels have been installed in a 9.5 x 21 front and 11 x 21 rear fitment, and wear 265/35 ZR 21 front and 305/30 ZR 21 rear Michelin performance tires for greater grip. The lightweight 3 piece wheels help to reduce weight at the wheel hub, which improves overall vehicle performance. The "Hellboy" package also includes an electronic lowering module that can reduce the ride height by 30 mm at the push of a button.

The Porsche Caymen is quick they is no questioning that it can get up to 62 mph in 5.4 seconds and the top speed of 170 mph. There are some pretty awesome extras that Porsche can offer when you buy a Caymen and that is the PASM which is Porsche Active Suspension Management however even if you decided not to have this fitted the Cayman still handles perfectly unlike the 911's that needed the PASM. With the PASM fitted it drops the Cayman by 10mm and if you hit the sport mode it tightens the dampers and well it just feels fantastic but that's just the start you can have a stop watch fitted as well so you can time your hot laps now that is hitting the market with a hammer!.

So in summary the Porsche Cayman is a fine example of what a rigid and tin top body shelled Porsche's are capable of. If you buy the Cayman S then you will be buying a package that has every advantage that Porsche can offer and yet I just could not see any disadvantages! The Cayman uses a combination of parts from the other Porsche's and so is not that expensive to produce or even to develop but it is going to produce some amazing well deserved profits for the Porsche the Cayman can only be described as a truly fantastic sports car.
