Don't Depart On Vacation Without Preparing Your Vehicle

By Edmont Pescatelini

Who wouldn't dream of a grand vacation driving across the country? Your potential future may include a long distance journey, whether its all by yourself or with family or friends. Many people, when they are ready for a holiday, just get in their car and take off, planning on making memories on the way. However, for most of us, a little planning should go a long way to making the trip more enjoyable. Following are a few tips to help get you ready for all the things that could happen on the road.

Don't let anything happen with your car along the way, by having all of the maintenance up to date. Check the battery and tires, and make sure the oil was changed recently. Plan your travel out so you do not have to worry about becoming lost or winding up somewhere you had no intention of visiting. Scheduling your overnite stops and checking for road construction trouble can help a lot, too. Have maps of the region for the durations you go off the road sightseeing. Understanding exactly what your location is and where you're heading will help you make wise decisions along the way. And also be alert - nearly all accidents are due to inattentive drivers. You can have a great time and a wonderful holiday if you've planned adequately and stay focused when driving.

Chatting on a cellular phone at the wrong time is not good, but it will be a lifesaver, if anything ever happens, such as an accident. It is sensible to keep the phone within reach, and know how it works, but don't use it for conversations while you are driving. Cell phones lead to accidents when being used in the car, but they are invaluable to have if you have car trouble. And make certain you buckle up - most states will require this, however seatbelts are a good idea regardless. If you are away from home, it is good to do things for protection against theft. Be sure you also get a tracking system and a steering wheel lock, as well as fuel and ignition system locks - criminals hate these things.

If you happen to get into an accident then implement whatever necessary to protect your family, and keep your car from further damage. Try to move your automobile away from traffic, and be sure and turn it off to keep it from overheating and catching fire. Also be sure and try to signal oncoming traffic and, finally, be sure and phone your insurance company on the spot. If your insurance policy is not paid up and current, don't even leave home.

Also, it is extremely essential that all your insurance papers actually be with you in your car. You never be prepared to be involved in a car accident, but you still need to be prepared.
