Improve Your Car's Pickup By Getting Gearbox Repairs

By Henry Taylor

You can make your car perform better if you keep it running well. That does not just mean the engine, that means all of the car, including the transmission. If your car is not responding the way you want it to, if it feels like the transmission is slipping, look into gearbox repairs to get additional life out of your car.

Some newer cars seem to have more problems than their older counterparts. The age of your vehicle matters less than you might think when it comes to transmission problems. Increased wear on the gearbox may also occur in city conditions or if winter storms find you trying to rock the car out of a snowbank. Manufacturer manuals will tell you how often you need to change transmission fluid. It has a life span and is less effective at lubricating when it is older.

Check with a mechanic who works primarily with transmission repair. They have the most experience and can often get the job done faster and cheaper than garages who rarely fix gearboxes. Make sure they have a good reputation and get an estimate. Check to see if it appears that the amount of work and the cost of parts looks appropriate before signing.

Your vehicle will be test-driven so the mechanic can see how it responds. If it looks like there is a problem, they will have to take it apart to determine what needs replacing. If there are tiny flakes of metal in the fluid, it means the gears have been grinding.

If your friends or family members tell you that you can fix it yourself, you might want to ignore them. This is a complicated job and one that is very messy and time-consuming. If you rarely drive the vehicle and want to repair the gearbox in your spare time, it can be fun. But for a car that takes you to work each day, you will need repairs done faster and more reliably. It is best to get a professional who will guarantee the work.

Repairing the gearbox, replacing it with a new one, or replacing it with a rebuilt one are the options your mechanic will present to you. If you will need your car in a hurry, it may be fastest to replace the gearbox with a new one. If money is more of a concern than time, a rebuilt unit might be the best option.

Regardless of which method you consider the best, money is always a concern. If you have an older car that has other mechanical issues on the horizon, the cost to repair it may not be worthwhile. At this point, you can sell it to a backyard mechanic or trade it in on a newer model. If your vehicle is relatively new and is in good shape otherwise, repairing or replacing the gearbox makes good financial sense.

Know all of the information you can before making a decision. Take some time and find out what the going rate is in your area for gearbox repairs. You can even talk to other mechanics to see what they would charge. If the prices seem appropriate and the garage you have chosen has a good reputation, you can move forward with the repairs.
